The Overfunctioning
Podcast

"You don't have to carry it all alone."

The Overfunctioning Podcast:

Conversations for women who carry a lot is for women who are used to holding everything together, taking care of everyone else, and pushing through even when they’re running on empty.

Hosted by therapists Brittanie and Jolene, we talk about anxiety, burnout, relationships, parenting, boundaries, grief, and the many ways overfunctioning can show up in everyday life.

Our goal is to help you understand why you do what you do, feel less alone, and figure out what it might look like to stop doing quite so much.

Overfunctioning: Conversations for Women Who Carry A Lot

Episode 1 - The Anatomy of Overfunctioning

In this pilot episode, therapists Jolene Altman and Brittanie Zwart introduce the concept of "overfunctioning", a reality for high-capacity, thoughtful, and often overwhelmed women. They share personal stories of their own struggles with overfunctioning through grad school, career building, and motherhood. This podcast is a space for women who have been taught to "do it all" and are quietly carrying an invisible mental load.

Episode 2 - Anxiety:
The Hidden Engine of Overfunctioning

In this episode, Jolene and Brittanie unpack the truth about high-functioning anxiety: why it gets praised instead of treated, how it quietly drives overfunctioning, and why midlife is often the moment it all catches up with us.

Episode 3 - Friendship, Overfunctioning, And The Fear Of Being Forgotten

In this episode of Overfunctioning, hosts Jolene Altman and Brittanie Zwart dive into the complex world of midlife friendships for women, exploring how overfunctioning and biological stress responses can inadvertently create isolation. They address the common sense of shame and old relational wounds that often surface in these dynamics, offering insights on how to foster authentic connection through direct communication and shared vulnerability.

Episode 4 - Imposter Syndrome
The Woman Behind the Performance

In this episode of Overfunctioning, Jolene and Brittanie unpack the complex reality of imposter syndrome: how it shape-shifts, why high-capacity women carry it, and the deep connection between feeling like a fraud and overfunctioning.

Episode 5 - How Do You Know
When It’s Time for Therapy

In this episode of Overfunctioning, therapists Jolene Altman and Brittanie Zwart tackle one of the most common questions high-capacity, overwhelmed women ask: How do you know when it’s actually time for therapy? They unpack the quiet signs of burnout, why overfunctioners tend to dismiss their own suffering, and how to navigate finding a therapist who is the right fit. This episode is a validating permission slip to seek support long before you hit a crisis point.

Episode 6 - You Don't Have to Manage Everyone's Feelings

In this episode of Overfunctioning, therapists Jolene Altman and Brittanie Zwart explore what it really means to carry the burden of managing everyone else's feelings. They break down the difference between being a thoughtful, considerate partner or parent and being hyper-attuned to everyone’s emotional state at the cost of your own. From over-accommodating everyday meltdowns to acting as the family "emotional translator," this episode examines where this pattern stems from, why it leads to deep resentment, and how to practice true vulnerability instead.
